Just 12 days after her dream wedding, Rute Cardoso, the wife of Portuguese football star Diogo Jota, was seen in utter grief as she left the morgue where her husband’s and brother-in-law’s bodies lay. Footage and photos from July 4 show Rute visibly shaken, unable to walk steadily without support, her face frozen in anguish.

The couple, who had been together for nearly a decade and had three young children, officially tied the knot in late June. Rute once described it as a dream come true, sharing radiant photos in her white wedding gown just days before the unimaginable loss.

On the night of July 3, Diogo Jota a star forward for Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team—was involved in a fatal car crash on Spain’s notorious A-52 highway near Zamora. He was driving a Lamborghini with his younger brother, André Silva, when the car’s tire reportedly burst while overtaking. The vehicle veered off, crashed into a ditch, and caught fire. Both brothers died at the scene, with bodies so badly charred that identification became a challenge.

Only days earlier, Jota had posted joyful photos with his family. He had just celebrated his son’s third birthday and recently welcomed a baby daughter. On the field, Jota was enjoying a peak in his career key to Liverpool’s Premier League 2024–25 victory and instrumental in Portugal’s consecutive UEFA Nations League win.

The football world is in mourning. Global icons like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Rafael Nadal, and LeBron James have expressed their condolences. UEFA, the Portuguese Football Federation, and Liverpool FC have all issued official tributes. A moment of silence will be held across all UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 matches, and Wimbledon, for the first time in its 148-year history, is allowing players to wear black armbands.

The A-52 highway has long been considered one of Spain’s deadliest routes, plagued by poor visibility and deteriorating road conditions. While questions rise about the road’s safety, the focus remains on the devastating impact on Jota’s family especially Rute, now a widow burdened with grief just days into what was supposed to be the happiest chapter of her life.
